Executive Communication & Board Relations

Executive Communication & Board Prep Checklist

Make every message count and build strong board relationships.

1. Strategic Messaging (Before You Speak)

  • Identify your 3 core messages. What absolutely MUST they take away?
  • Know your audience. How does this message impact each stakeholder group?
  • Anticipate questions. What are the likely challenges or objections?

2. Board Meeting Prep

  • Materials: Are your executive summaries concise (1-2 pages)? Is complex data presented visually and simply?
  • Rehearse: Practice your delivery, focusing on presence and confidence.
  • Align: Pre-brief key board members on critical items.

3. During the Meeting

  • Clarity: Speak clearly, directly, and avoid jargon.
  • Listen Actively: Understand underlying concerns, don’t just wait to talk.
  • Guide Discussion: Facilitate, don’t dominate. Aim for collaborative decision-making.
  • Transparency: Share both good news and challenges.

4. Post-Meeting Follow-up

  • Document: Ensure clear action items and ownership.
  • Build Relationships: Follow up individually with board members to strengthen rapport.

Golden Rule: Executive communication is about influencing, not just informing. Build trust, inspire confidence, and drive action.
